Facebook, MySpace,Twitter, treasured communication tools

There are most definitely benefits to social media, such as Facebook and Twitter.

Forme, Facebook presents an opportunity to "reach out and touchsomeone," just like the slogan in the 1980's touted by long distance phonegiant AT&T. Ma Bell is still an important part of everyday life, butshe certainly has her competition these days. More and more people are reachingout through cyberspace. Twitter is a bit more suited to reaching in than reaching out, but has its value as well.

MySpace fits the profile to a degree, but in recent months, has lost some popularity. Facebook seems to have taken over.

Socialnetworking sites allow connect to others in a way that not long agowasn't even possible.

Facebook is for families

My family is small. Like many, we don't excel at keeping in-touch. We have even slacked off on thatannual Christmas card exchange, once a time-honored tradition. Also, myhusband and I have recently moved to another state, so we left behindmany good friends and family members.

Communication is so important.Facebook and to some degree MySpace, has allowed me to link with cousins I haven't seenin years. I've re-connected with friends from our former neighborhood.I've even found some new friends from high schooI, growing new friendships out of old ones. Some of the high school pals were no more than a familiar name at first, but now have grown into cherished friendships. Just seeing their names and an updated pictureof them, brings me back to those carefree days of my youth. Memorieslong buried have come flooding back.

My children have accounts, sowe can supplement our phone conversations, with our on-line chats. I cansee pictures of my grandkids readily, thanks to the advancement ofdigital photography and the ease of sharing. It is like being a part oftheir lives in a way that might not have been possible any other way.

Twitter and the news

Twitter satisfies the need to know what is going on. As a news hound, I get regular Twitter updates from news sources, individual news gatherers. When the earthquake struck in Chile and it seemed like a tsunami was imminent in the Pacific. Thanks to a Tweet, I was able to connect to the live news feed from Hawaii. More recently, when CNN sent out a breaking news brief about a Missouri school bus crash on Interstate 44, a Tweet provided the location for a live news feed from a helicopter hovering over scene.

Twitter plugs into individual interests

As an avid NASCAR fan, I getTweets from drivers when they are off the track and their support crewswhen they are on the track. Following Twitter during a race helps keep track of racing activity that is often missed on television.

As a writer, I follow many different writing resources and other writers. I am able to commisserate with fellow writers on both Facebook and Twitter.

I know there are drawbacks to spending so much time on line, but with access to so many people, it is no wonder this is called social media. Some have even become addicted to their Facebook and Twitter use. Like any other activity, there have to be guidelines to follow.

For me, I have found social media to be an excellent communication tool and a very positive experience.
