O'Hare expansion on track

It appears the uncertainty surrounding the future of O'Hare International Airport has been settled. Expansion of runways in the third-busiest airport in the world now appears imminent now that the City of Chicago has reached an agreement with United and American Airlines. The $1.17 billion deal to mark the next phase of the O'Hare Modernization Plan is just in time for Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley to leave office with his pet project in tact. Daley decided to retire this year rather than to seek a seventh term in office. He has served the city proudly for 21 years.

O'Hare International Airport is Chicago's crown jewel. Though it was built by his father, Richard M. Daley, the younger Daley has devoted much of his time in office on this all-important project.

There have been many obstacles to thwart O'Hare's progress in reaching its full potential. One of those—one in which I became involved—has been the State of Illinois' effort to build a new airport near Peotone. Initially, the proposal called for a 23,000-acre airport. The seven-square mile facility would have been three times the size of O'Hare.

In the 1960's, Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley wanted to build a third Chicago airport. When that didn't pan out, the idea was hijacked by suburban officials who felt they deserved a piece of O'Hare's prosperity pie. In the 1980's O'Hare's suburban neighbors fought bitterly to prevent O'Hare from growing. Their idea of a solution was to build a new airport south of the city—over 40 miles south of the city—near Peotone.

With the defeat of John Geiles, the mayor of Bensenville in 2009, the effort to stymie O'Hare's growth finally concluded.

There is still no end in sight for the Peotone Airport project, despite dwindling support, now by only a select few in Illinois. Unfortunately, one of those supporters is the Governor, Pat Quinn, who refuses to read the handwriting on the wall that says No Peotone Airport!
